View of the Nile at Luxor
Painted in 1857 on the artist’s first trip to Egypt. It’s unusual to come across a Gérôme painting that doesn’t include a figure or an animal. The drawing was used as a model for the background of one of the artist’s most famous paintings, ‘The Prisoner,’ which was created in 1861 and is now on display at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nantes. Following his voyage to Egypt in 1857, the artist established himself as one of France’s most well-known and successful painters of Near-Eastern subjects.
